Line-of-duty benefits, pensions, and group life get blended together in conversation. They pay in different situations. Indexed universal life is a personal policy some responders look at for the years after they leave the department, or for events a duty benefit does not cover.
Indexed universal life (IUL) is permanent life insurance. Interest credited to the cash value can be linked to a market index, with caps, floors, and charges set by the carrier. It is not an investment. A licensed agent explains cash value, costs, and limits. Underwriting varies by job and by carrier. A hazardous job is not a promise of coverage.
What is the department's, and what is yours
- A line-of-duty benefit that may not pay for a death off shift
- Group life that can shrink or end at retirement or a transfer
- Overtime and details the household spends and a flat benefit ignores
- Volunteer, per diem, and career roles that do not share one plan
