New CDL. Maybe a new baby. Maybe a first house. It's a lot of firsts at once — and a lot of people suddenly counting on one paycheck.
Why newer drivers look at this early
Age and health are two of the biggest things insurers look at, so many people find it easier to start while they're younger. It also tends to line up with the years when a family depends on your income the most.
A simple way to think about it
- How many years will the kids be at home?
- How much is left on the mortgage or rent commitments?
- Could your spouse or partner cover the bills alone? For how long?
- Does your first carrier offer any life insurance — and would it follow you if you switch?
Term life is often used for exactly these years; permanent coverage is another option with different costs and features. A licensed agent can explain both without pushing either.
Naming a beneficiary
If your kids are young, naming them directly can create complications. Many parents use a trust or custodian instead — an agent or attorney can explain your options.
