Some years you are on a big commercial job with a full benefit package. Other years you are running service calls out of your own van. Your family's bills look the same either way.

Where electricians find gaps

  • Group life insurance through the hall or a shop that may change when you change jobs
  • Service work on your own, where nobody else is providing a policy
  • A van, tools, and a loan that are in your name
  • Questions about live work and heights that deserve a straight answer from a licensed agent

Before you switch shops or go out on your own, ask what happens to any life insurance tied to the old job and when it ends.

Electrician questions

I have life insurance through my local. Is that enough?
It depends on the amount, who it is meant to cover, and whether it stays with you if you leave or retire. Many people use it as a starting point and look at a personal policy for the rest.
Does working energized equipment change what insurers ask?
Insurers look at your duties, health, age, and the amount together. Being an electrician is not a yes or no on its own. A licensed agent can tell you which questions to expect.
I just started my own shop. What should I bring up?
Mention any business loans, the van, and anyone at home who depends on your income. Those help a licensed agent understand what a policy would need to cover.
